Have you ever found yourself packing your presentation with as much content as possible, thinking that the more you share, the more value you’re giving? I’ve been there too. But what I’ve learned—and what I want to share with you—is that the most powerful presentations are not those filled with tips and strategies. They’re the ones that create transformation.
As women thought leaders, speakers, and entrepreneurs, it’s tempting to prove our value through knowledge. But in today’s content-saturated world, what your audience craves isn’t more information. It’s connection, insight, clarity, and a vision of what’s possible. Let’s explore why less info = more impact, and how you can shift your approach.
The Problem with Information Overload
Information used to be scarce. We had to go to the library, dig through encyclopedias, or ask an expert to find answers. But now, it’s everywhere. A quick Google search can get us anything we need in seconds. So when you’re presenting and you lead with an info dump, you’re not offering something unique – you’re adding to the noise.
This is what I call the expert trap: thinking that the more information you share, the more valuable your talk is. But that actually backfires. When people feel overwhelmed, they disconnect. Your audience doesn’t want to be impressed by how much you know; they want to see what’s possible for them.
Transformation Is What Sticks
So what should you focus on instead? Transformation. This is where the real value lies. Your goal is to help your audience experience a shift – in how they think, what they believe, and what they see as possible.
You don’t have to eliminate all information. But information alone isn’t enough. You need to filter it through your lens of curation, discernment, and wisdom. This is where your voice and perspective shine.
Here’s what that looks like in action:
- Web Developer A gives you the specs: plugins, file sizes, calendar integrations. Helpful? Maybe. Memorable? Not really.
- Web Developer B asks you about your goals: how you want your brand to feel, what kind of clients you want to attract, and how your site can help grow your business. That’s transformation.
Or take coaching:
- Coach A talks about how many calls and worksheets you’ll get.
- Coach B asks what success looks like to you, where you’re feeling stuck, and what you dream about. Transformation.
Your audience wants someone who sees their potential, not someone who inundates them with facts.
The 3 Keys to Creating Transformation
So how do you move from information to transformation in your presentations?
1. Empathy
Get into your audience’s head. What do they want? What’s keeping them stuck? Use their language. Share stories that reflect their experiences. Empathy builds trust, and trust is the foundation of transformation.
2. Vision
Paint a vivid picture of what’s possible. Whether you’re speaking to a single individual or a room full of people, they need to see a better future. Tell stories, give examples, and use metaphors that help them see themselves in that vision.
3. Stories
Stories are transformation. They make information emotional and memorable. Use your own stories, client stories, and even pop culture references. For instance, I shared lessons from TV shows like Succession, WeCrashed, and Inventing Anna in this episode – not because I want anyone to copy their behavior (please don’t!), but because there are insights we can take away:
- Big visions are magnetic
- Confidence sells
- People want to believe in something and someone
Let your stories do the heavy lifting. They invite people in and show them what’s possible.

- Audit your slides or script. Highlight what’s pure information. Then ask yourself: what’s the transformation I want to create?
- Replace three tips or facts with one story. Stories create resonance.
- Add a vision moment. Pause and paint a picture of what success looks like for your audience.
- Practice empathy. Before writing your talk, jot down what your audience wants, fears, and hopes for.
- Bookend with emotion. Start with a story, end with a call to possibility.
